Ganizah: A Reconstructionist Approach

Monday, March 1, 2021 17 Adar 5781

2:00 PM - 2:30 PMHybrid: Virtual and B'nai Havurah (outside)

When a piece of paper has the name of God on it, it isn’t quite like other pieces of paper. Judaism has a tradition of handling such pages with great care – burying them with an honored scholar or storing them in a special place, a genizah. Five years ago, we began to think about how to handle our outdated High Holy Day books, machzorim, and other material with God’s name, and decided our special handling would be to recycle the paper into new uses. We will have a short service to mark this transformation

We welcome everyone to join us at B'nai in the parking lot or on Zoom.

Registration is not required but appreciated. In notes, please let us know if you are joining us in person or on Zoom.

A genizah (or geniza); Hebrew: גניזה  "storage"; plural: genizot or genizoth or genizahs) is a storage area in a Jewish synagogue or cemetery designated for the temporary storage of worn-out Hebrew-language books and papers on religious topics prior to proper cemetery burial.
