Hidden Heritage: Legacy of the Crypto Jews

In this presentation, we will explore the significance of crypto-Jewish identity among contemporary descendants of Iberian Jews who were forcibly converted to Christianity between the 15th and 17th centuries. Based on research with individuals and communities with crypto-Jewish ancestry, this talk will explore the transition of memory across generations and the importance of family narratives and ritual in the preservation of secret Jewish identities among descendant populations. In addition, the role of women will be addressed in the history and patterns of secrecy that characterized crypto-Jewish heritage and family life.
