As part of our 2021 Elul experience, the Racial Justice and Awareness Committee at B’nai Havurah invites you to join us in thinking about different aspects of race in America. We will use poetry, reflective writing and collage art to explore these issues in two experiential sessions.

We hope you will be able to attend both sessions, but if you are only able to attend one, we encourage you to register for that session. Sessions will be recorded.

PART I:  Allegiance
Wednesday, August 11th, 4:30 – 6:00 pm

In this experiential session, we will explore issues around race, inclusion, our own place in America, and how we can enrich and expand our own understanding of these topics.  We will emphasize multiple ways to think about these issues, including poetry, reflective writing, deep sharing and silent reflection. In addition to discussing these subjects, we will consider what actions we can take.

PART II:  Shared Future
Wednesday, August 25th, 4:30 – 6:00 pm

In this session we will explore subjects such as beauty, blackness, inheritance, and feelings of helplessness and of strength. As in the first session, we will emphasize multiple ways to think about these issues, including poetry, reflective writing, deep sharing and silent reflection.  Positive action will be emphasized as well.

FACILITATOR:  Talia Winokur grew up as a member of B'nai Havurah in the 1980s and 1990s, often teaching in the religious school and leading services. After college, she lived in La Paz, Bolivia and Los Angeles where she worked on several interfaith and cross/racial initiatives. Before moving back to Denver in 2018, she was the director of Breakthrough Santa Fe, a college access program for low-income students in Northern New Mexico. She is currently an elementary school teacher at Smith Elementary school in North Park Hill, where she teaches language arts to Spanish speaking 3rd through 5th graders.
