Teagan Moran's B'nai Mitzvah Project

For my b'nai mitzvah project, I have spent the past year exploring new ways to give back to our community. My Mom and Dad showed me how to research different organizations and get a better understanding of how resources are spent. That way I can see how much value my efforts can add.

That is how I discovered a really special organization called Impact Humanity. For several years, I have worked with my Mom to donate my clothing and toys to different organizations. But a lot of people don't really think about where their stuff is going and how it will be used. A lot of people just empty out drawers, throw stuff in bags, and drop it at a donation center because it is
convenient. A lot of people aren't thinking about how much more value you can add by doing something a little less convenient.

Impact Humanity is really special because they have created an actual store in Five-Points where people who are in need and homeless can go shop for clothes off of racks. People are able to try on clothes to make sure they fit right instead of being handed clothes out of a trash bag in a parking lot. The idea is to give individuals in our community back their humanity. This donation store lets people in need find something they are able to love during all seasons. This helps people in our community feel like they are human. It gives them back their dignity. Impact Humanity does not put restrictions and conditions on getting to shop. They understand that sometimes when you are homeless, your belongings get stolen. So you may not be able to wait a month or two to get new stuff. Also, they recognize that the weather changes fast in Colorado so you may have different clothing needs. Having clothing that is the right size is very important so people are able to keep warm during the winter or cool during the summer when it can get really hot.

A few months ago, I worked with my Mom to gather donations for Impact Humanity. We drove around the Denver Metro Area to pick-up donations from my Mom's co-workers. We used money that was donated to buy new socks and underwear for children. We also went through our own stuff to donate blankets, sheets, towels, jackets, and socks. Then we went and dropped the donations off at a volunteer's house. Even though it was a lot of work to gather and organize the donations, I am very happy to know it went to an organization that adds so much value to our community.
