When Jews Were Funny, an Alan Zweig film, is “insightful and hilarious, and surveys the history of Jewish comedy from the early days of the Borsht belt to the present, ultimately exploring the entire unruly question of what it means to be Jewish.” (Kanopy) Zweig interviews and/or includes a number of performances of Jewish comedians, from Shelley Berman to Howie Mandel to Judy Gold to Rodney Dangerfield. The movie won the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival award for the year's best Canadian feature.
