Wednesday, October 5, 2022 10 Tishrei 5783

2:00 PM - 2:45 PMIn person at Highlands Church or on Zoom (interactive)

One of the haftarot that is traditionally read on Yom Kippur is from the Book of Isaiah 57:14-58:14.  This section of the Book of Isaiah includes one of the most well-known and challenging passages of the Tanach.

"Is this the fast I desire,
A day for men to starve their bodies?
Is it bowing the head like a bulrush
And lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Do you call that a fast?...

No, this is the fast I desire:
To unlock fetters of wickedness…
To share your bread with the hungry,
And to take the wretched poor into your home;
When you see the naked, to clothe him…”

Jewish holidays are rich in symbol and ritual, and Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are no exception.  From honey to the sounding of the shofar, to fasting and more, we have received traditions that are meant to support our process of teshuvah--making transformational change.  How can rituals and symbolic gestures guide our behavior in the coming year and beyond?  Join us for this participatory session/discussion as we explore the relationship between ritual practices and our intentions and behaviors.
