People are often surprised to hear the term “Jewish meditation,” assuming that the “mystical” elements in Judaism are restricted to Kabbalistic or Chassidic esoterica. Most Jewish people interested in meditation take up practices rooted in Eastern spiritual disciplines. Judaism, however, is an Eastern religion that migrated West, and its meditative masters almost certainly had contact with the meditative systems of Sufism, the spiritual disciplines of the Indian subcontinent, and early Christianity. How do Jewish methods of meditation compare with practices rooted in Asian spirituality? How are they similar? How do they diverge? How did they “disappear” from conventional Jewish practice? In this two-part series we will focus on the historical, spiritual, and experiential aspects of Jewish meditation with an emphasis on the types of meditative discipline, and the practical application and integration of meditation into one’s life. Attending both classes is recommended but not required. It would be most beneficial if participants can make a commitment to a daily practice that could be reasonably integrated into their daily life.  Please register for this event below.

Facilitator: Simon Zalkind, B’nai Havurah member, is an independent curator and art advisor specializing in modern and contemporary art. He has worked with numerous institutions, corporations and collectors in curating collections and exhibitions, including The Brooklyn Museum, The Neuberger Museum, The Denver Art Museum, Redline, the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Singer Gallery at the MACC, and many others.
