Kabbalat Shabbat Experience - Kirtan Shabbat with Indian Inspired Potluck Dinner

Friday, January 25, 2019 19 Shevat 5779

6:30 PM - 8:30 PMB'nai Havurah

Welcome Shabbat with Rabbi Evette and B'nai Havurah's Kabbalat Shabbat Experience, a music-filled, all-ages celebration on (usually) the fourth Friday night of each month.

At 6:30 pm, Hal Aqua and fellow musicians lead a musical journey through the themes of the Friday night service, followed at 7:30 by candle lighting, Kiddush, and Motzi led by Rabbi Evette. We end the evening with an optional potluck that builds camaraderie and community.

Friday, January 25: Kirtan Shabbat

Kirtan is a centuries-old spiritual practice from the Bhakti (devotional) Yoga tradition in India. It's a chant-based call-and-response method of providing all people with a sense of connection to the Divine.

Kirtan chanting has become a popular phenomenon in the United States over the past few decades and has broadened in musical approach to appeal to wider audiences. The kirtan format is easily adaptable to Jewish prayer and practice, and a number of Jewish singers have developed a style called Hebrew Kirtan.

Kirtan is not a performance or a concert; it is a journey into the self through the practice of listening and singing. Everyone is encouraged to add their voices to what becomes the sound of One Voice.
