Street Art and the Holocaust in Berlin: Controversies in Memorializing
Thursday, January 8, 2015 • 17 Tevet 5775
7:00 PM - 9:00 PMB'nai Havurah, 6445 East Ohio Avenue, Denver, CO 80224In the last few years, various Berlin artists have taken to public art displays memorializing the horrors of the Holocaust.
These pieces are not within museum walls, therefore not contained in the museum culture of directed meaning with narratives educating the audience about how and what they need to understand. Without any guidance, this Holocaust Street Art is found in public spaces throughout the city.
Class facilitator, Barbara Ellman, LCSW, will show pictures and videos she shot in Berlin which captured a collection of this art. She will lead a discussion that asks of participants, “How does this public art affect our relationship to the Holocaust, memory, and memorializing?”
Facilitator: Barbara Ellman, B’nai Havurah member, is a clinical social worker in private practice with a passion for art.
Registration required. No cost for members, $5 for non-members.
