Portrayal of Jews in Western Art/Architecture through the Ages - Part 2: 19th Century through Modern Times

Monday, November 17, 2014 24 Cheshvan 5775

7:00 PM - 8:30 PMB'nai Havurah, 6445 East Ohio Avenue, Denver, CO 80224

In the modern and contemporary periods the visual image moves to the center of Jewish self-representation, challenging the assumption of the anti-visuality of Jewish culture. In this hour-long class we’ll examine the Jew’s role in the rise of modernity, key Jewish artists of the 19th century through the mid-20th century, and Jewish self-representation in con- temporary visual art. Some of the artists that we’ll discuss are El Lissitsky, Marc Chagall, Ben Shahn, Komar and Melamid, Judy Chicago, Debra Kass, R. B. Kitaj, Jack Levine, Archie Rand, and others. We’ll also examine art movements with a strong Jewish presence — holocaust related art, feminist art, abstract expressionism, street photography, and the 2nd Russian avant-garde. If time permits we can also discuss the Jewish role in inventing and reinventing the extraordinary contemporary art market with its associated wealth, prestige, and glamour.

Facilitator: Simon Zalkind, B’nai Havurah member, is an independent curator and art advisor specializing in modern and contemporary art. He has worked with numerous institutions, corporations and collectors in curating collections and exhibitions, including The Brooklyn Museum, The Neuberger Museum, The Denver Art Museum, Redline, the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Singer Gallery at the MACC, and many others.
